Born to Travel I’ve been keeping journals since age eight (then called “diaries”), won my first short story award in second grade and was met with applause by family and friends. How could I not be a writer? I have also been a traveler since earliest memory, moving up and down the east coast with my family, hitchhiking back and forth across the U.S. in my teens and working my way around the globe in my twenties — driving a cheese delivery truck in London, bartending in Athens, selling carpets in Istanbul, editing for a publishing company in Sydney, consulting to a “New York-style deli” in Tauranga, New Zealand and cooking on a herring tender in the Bering Sea. Good Work In 1980, I began my career as a reporter in Seward, Alaska which lead to a job as lifestyles editor at a daily newspaper in Kona, Hawaii and eventually on to on-air news director position at an FM station in Hilo. After covering the eruption of Mauna Loa in 1984, I moved to Denver to take a job as associate editor of Colorado Business Magazine, my last position as an employee. Freelance Writer, Editor, Consultant Independent travel informed and reinforced my entrepreneurial tendencies, and the discipline of reporting gave me the confidence to pursue freelancing. Thanks to the Macintosh and my knowledge of layout from the “old days” in newspaper production (do you remember wax?), my desktop publishing business grew organically, even before the term “DTP” was coined. Along the way, I discovered I had an innate talent for marketing, which led to another facet of my career path —helping businesses identify and prioritize their Marketing and Communication needs. Soon I was creating not only promotional materials but P.R. campaigns and leadership workshops, and consulting to businesses and not-for-profit organizations. After 20 years, hundreds of clients, helping raise two magnificent stepsons and developing my real estate agency, I am renewing my quest to travel purposefully and share my discoveries and adventures with lovers of the printed word.
